An international study conducted by a team of scientists from Tunisia and Mexico has found that landraces of wheat, with a wide and varied genetic base, have shown good results in immunity to yellow spot, a disease that is increasingly affecting crops in Tunisia. The study was conducted at the INGC-Koudia research station in Bou Salem, Tunisia, and involved testing 113 samples of durum wheat cultivars from 12 different Mediterranean countries for pyrenophorosis resistance. The research found that 67% and 80% of resistant and moderately resistant accessions, respectively, were landraces, suggesting the possible presence of new sources of resistance in some landraces for use in breeding programs.
