The South African Citrus Growers Association (CGA) has updated its long-term production goals, aiming to increase citrus production from 165 million cartons to 260 million cartons between 2023 and 2032. The initial projection for 2024 suggested a production volume of 230 million cartons, falling short of the target of 260 million cartons. The production volumes of mandarins, lemons, oranges, and grapefruits have varied in their performance against the set targets for the years 2023 and 2024. Mandarin volumes have exceeded expectations due to increased exports to China and Hong Kong, while lemon volumes have not met the predicted growth in Asia, the Middle East, and North America. Orange volumes have slightly surpassed targets, with increased demand from the EU, North America, and Russia. Grapefruit volumes have been the most variable, with production expected to surpass forecasts in 2024 and 2025 after initial below-estimate performance in 2023.
