In the first four months of 2024, Spain experienced a 6% increase in volume and 16% increase in value in its imports of fresh fruit and vegetables compared to the same period in 2023, reaching 1.5 million tonnes and 1.8 billion EUR respectively. This growth is part of a larger trend over recent years. Vegetable imports, mainly potatoes, saw a 9% increase in volume and 17% increase in value, while fruit imports, led by bananas, increased by 3.6% in volume and 15% in value. This surge in imports is raising concerns about the potential impact on national production.
