Spain's sunflower production for 2024 is expected to be similar to the previous year, with 767,000 hectares sown, primarily in Castilla y León, Andalusia, and Castilla-La Mancha. However, the Spanish Sunflower Association (AEG) has noted lower than expected yields due to insufficient winter rainfall and a lack of reserve water in the soil. The type of sunflower sown varies by region, with Andalusia focusing more on high oleic varieties for frying. The international price of sunflower oil is influenced by production in countries like Ukraine, Russia, and Argentina, as well as EU countries and the United States. In Spain, sunflower oil prices are currently between 430 and 475 euros per tonne, while high oleic sunflower oil ranges from 470 to 575 euros per tonne. These prices are influenced by climatic instability, competition from other oils like canola and palm oil, and the cost of oil, which is used as an alternative biofuel.
