Despite the decrease in harvests in the Mediterranean basin, olive oil consumption in China, particularly from Spain, has seen a significant increase from 12,000 tons in 2008/09 to 42,500 tons in 2022/23. This increase is largely driven by the adoption of the Mediterranean diet by young consumers in large Chinese cities. However, olive oil still faces competition from other cooking oils like soybean, sunflower, peanut, and rapeseed oils. Producers and exporters of olive oil are encouraged to understand the Chinese market, develop consumer profiles, and integrate olive oil into Chinese cuisine. Health benefits and geographical quality certifications are key factors that could increase the competitiveness of olive oil in the Chinese market. However, trade tensions between Europe and China could potentially impact the export of agricultural products, including olive oil.
