Ukraine is making strides in aquaculture and fish population restoration despite the ongoing war with Russia. In Poltava Oblast, 26,000 juvenile fish were stocked to rejuvenate fish populations, supported by the State Fisheries Agency and various organizations. The country has also seen a 4.3% increase in aquaculture products in 2023, with carp being the most cultivated species. Efforts to combat illegal fishing and align with EU markets are in progress, alongside legislative support. Additionally, the use of artificial intelligence is revolutionizing the monitoring of coastal fish populations, reducing the need for direct human intervention. With nearly 4,000 business entities involved in aquaculture in 2022, producing over 14.6 thousand tons of aquatic bioresources, Ukraine's commitment to its aquatic biodiversity and aquaculture industry is evident, even as it faces the challenges of war.
