The Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) has expressed concern over the impact of Kanlaon Volcano's eruption on the Philippines' sugar industry. The eruption has caused acidity from ash to damage sugarcane leaves, leading to faster cane maturation and the production of vinegar instead of sugar. The eruption has also caused soil disruption, potentially reducing sugar yield. The SRA is hoping that rainfall will help wash away the ash and lower acidity levels on crops. The organization is projecting a decrease in the country’s sugar production for the current crop year due to the combined effects of El Niño and La Niña phenomena, with the prevailing retail price of sugar ranging from P74 to P90 per kg for refined sugar.
