Costa Rica's orange production is projected to decrease slightly to 285,000 tons in the 2020/2021 season, down from 290,000 tons the previous year, according to FAS data. The decrease is due to harvest delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic during the 2019/2020 season. The industry invested in sanitary protocols and new infrastructure to limit the spread of the disease among workers. The United States is the primary consumer of Costa Rican orange juice, accounting for 75 percent of total exports in 2019, followed by the European Union and China. Costa Rican orange juice enters the United States duty-free under the US-Central American Free Trade Agreement.
