A study conducted at the Embrapa Meio Ambiente Agroecological Site in partnership with UFSCar and Esalq aimed to evaluate the productive performance of irrigated lettuce in various cultivation methods, including single and intercropped with arugula and radish in agroforestry systems (SAFs) and full sun. The results showed that intercropping systems were advantageous, producing a greater quantity of vegetables per unit of inputs and water. The research also analyzed soil management for green manure plants in SAFs and found that vegetables, particularly lettuce, are a good alternative for the early years of SAFs due to their high economic value and minimal land use. The study highlights the benefits of agroecological production systems like biodiverse SAFs, which optimize input use, water, and labor, and can be used for food production as well as soil quality restoration.
