The Institute for Agricultural Market Studies (IKAR) predicts a decrease in Russia's sugar production in the 2024/25 agricultural year, estimating a 11% drop to 6.1 million tons. Despite a 10% increase in sugar beet acreage to 1.7 million hectares, the root crop harvest decreased by 8.7% to 42.7 million tons. IKAR attributes the majority of the yield decrease to economic regions in southern and central Russia, forecasting a 15% drop in the gross sugar beet harvest to 45 million tons. However, the Ministry of Agriculture challenges these figures, projecting a similar harvest size of 44 million tons, which would result in sugar production of 6.3-6.4 million tons. The ministry also anticipates a reduction in sugar beet acreage to 1.1-1.2 million hectares in 2025, citing increased domestic sugar production as a factor that surpasses domestic demand.
