The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs in South Korea is planning to increase the budget for the agricultural direct payment system to 5 trillion won by 2027. This move is aimed at boosting the income of farm households and positioning agriculture as a sustainable and eco-friendly industry. The ministry will review the system, looking at models from Japan, the United States, and the European Union. These countries have implemented direct payment systems to support farm stability amidst changing market conditions. The system will support farmers who grow strategic crops, such as wheat, soybeans, and powdered rice, which are highly dependent on imports. The budget for these direct payments will be increased, and farmers who convert rice fields to grow high-yielding crops will also be supported.
