A research partnership between IMAFIR-MT and KASBA S.A aims to boost the special sesame project in Mato Grosso, Brazil, using the sweeter K2 cultivar, which is highly valued in the Asian market. The state already produces around 186.7 thousand tons of sesame annually across 381.9 thousand hectares, with the municipality of Canarana being the leading producer. The project seeks to provide support and guidance to family farmers, using efficient, low-cost machinery and technology, and hopes to supply k2 to the international market by next year. The collaboration also aims to promote manual harvesting and provide alternative income sources for small farmers through sesame cultivation.
