The Tequila Regulatory Council (CRT) has registered tequila as a Certification Mark in New Zealand, providing legal protection for the national drink in the country. The registration is valid until 2026 and renewable every 10 years. The CRT, with the support of the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI), initiated the registration process in 2016. New Zealand is one of the main tequila consuming countries in Oceania, with tequila exports to the country increasing by 18.5% in 2019. The CRT has already registered tequila as a trademark in the United States, some European Union countries, and China, representing over 96% of total tequila exports.
