The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency has prevented the release of 1,546 tons of non-compliant food imports into the Bulgarian and EU markets between January and June 2021, a decrease from the 2,100 tons stopped in all of 2020. The majority of the confiscations were pepper shipments due to high pesticide residues, and dairy products and meat by-products were also frequently found to be non-compliant due to missing or incorrect documentation. These products were either destroyed or sent back to their countries of origin, in line with EU regulations and Bulgarian law.
