The storage and use of shelled and unshelled walnuts are to be handled in roughly the same way, with cleaning and washing being almost identical in both cases. Walnuts are one of our favorite autumn (shelled) fruits, but their cultivation has presented numerous challenges in recent years. The main reason is the western walnut husk fly, which has ruined the crop in many places. The females lay their eggs in the green husk of the walnut, and it is the larvae that hatch from these eggs that truly cause trouble for growers by feeding on them. This year, the drier weather and conscious pest control (spraying, soil disinfection) kept the pests in check, so many people were able to enjoy a good harvest. The walnut husk fly swarm typically lasts from late July to mid-August, so this period requires special attention to ensure a good yield.
