The ongoing crisis instigated by French farmers, which has now spread to Belgium and Portugal, is threatening to cause significant damage to the Spanish citrus campaign. The Citrus Management Committee (CGC) is demanding a safe corridor for the transit of perishable products and compensation for losses, which are not currently covered by French law. The crisis has caused delays in deliveries and has been worsened by derogatory comments from French politicians and journalists. The conflict is also causing tensions between transporters and Spanish export companies, with transporters starting to ignore the perishable goods they carry due to delays. This crisis could seriously affect the pace of harvesting and there have been 14 food alerts due to high pesticide residues or banned phytosanitary products in citrus fruits from Egypt and Turkey.
