The Peruvian citrus season has commenced late, but the Association of Citrus Producers of Peru (ProCitrus) anticipates a 4.24% increase in production to 270,000 tons in 2023, up from 259,000 tons the previous year. The season is expected to bring similar export volumes as last year, with an extension until August due to the development of late varieties and control measures against pests. The industry recovery follows a challenging 2022 due to high transportation costs and the impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which disrupted normal supply routes to the European market and led to significant drops in tangelo and orange shipments. However, Eureka lemon exports saw a rise, and growers are planning to reduce their mandarin and orange crops by an average of 8% due to low yields.
