Spanish household consumption of eggs saw an increase of 6.2% in 2021 compared to 2019, despite a slight decrease from the previous year. Households spent 14% more on eggs in 2021 than in 2019, totaling 987 million euros. The egg industry remains a significant part of the Spanish diet, with 407.9 million kilograms consumed in 2021, marking a 6.1% increase from 2019. The sector experienced a 1.6% growth in exports in 2021, with France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Belgium, the Netherlands, Mauritania, the UK, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and Equatorial Guinea as the main destinations. However, rising production costs have led to a decrease in gross margins for laying poultry in 2022. The industry is also transitioning to alternative production systems, such as on-the-floor, free-range, or ecological, in response to the European Commission's initiative to phase out cage use, with an 19% increase in the census of layers in alternative systems and a 12% rise in alternative farms.
