The EU recognizes the urgency of supporting the legume sector with the development and availability of quality sowing seed

Researchers from the Institute of Sustainable Agriculture (IAS) of the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) of Córdoba participate in the project “Improvement of European legumes for greater sustainability”, BELIS (Breeding European Legumes for Increased Sustainability, for its acronym in English) , in which 34 partners participate, including technical and research institutes, breeders and seed companies, as well as other relevant actors in the legume sector from 18 countries (15 in the EU, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Lebanon) with the objective main goal of improving the sustainability of legumes grown in Europe. Specifically, the project focuses on the main forage legumes (clovers, alfalfa, sainfoin, bird's foot clover and vetches) and grain legumes (peas, broad beans, soybeans, lupins, lentils, chickpeas and beans), which represent the diversity of species of legumes grown in Europe and currently grown to produce feed for ruminants (cattle, sheep, goats and ...
