EU agriculture ministers have agreed on new total allowable catches (TACs) for fish in the Baltic Sea for 2021, with a focus on population restoration. The herring catch is to be reduced by 50%, while quotas for flounder, sprat, and cod in the western part of the Baltic Sea will be increased by 5-6%. The TAC for salmon is also slightly increased, and recreational fishing quotas remain the same. The EU aims to end the operation of fishing vessels in regions with the most unfavorable fish populations and will provide support to affected fishermen. The decision was welcomed by environmentalists but deemed insufficient, with a call for consideration of broader ecosystem issues.
