Between January and May of 2024, Bulgaria experienced a decrease in the import of fresh vegetables by 8.8%, totaling 142.9 thousand tons, due to increased production of winter greens and a decrease in the import of more expensive winter and spring vegetables. On the other hand, the import of fresh fruit surged by 9.2%, totaling 157.3 thousand tons, driven by significant increases in the import of watermelons, grapes, melons, apples, plums, and cherries, with apricots seeing an 83% increase. The export of fresh vegetables saw a decrease, largely due to a drop in the sale of tomatoes and cucumbers, while the export of fresh fruit increased, with watermelons, grapes, melons, apples, plums, and cherries experiencing significant increases in export volumes. The report also highlighted a decrease in the re-export of citrus fruits and the export of strawberries and quinces, contrasted by increases in the export of pears, nuts, peaches, and apricots.
