A French parliamentarian, Jordan Guitton, has raised concerns over a significant increase in the import of Ukrainian sugar beets to the European Union, which has surged from 20,000 tons to 400,000 tons in the 2022-2023 period. The quantity reached 700,000 tons last year, leading to a dramatic drop in EU sugar prices by 30%. Guitton argues that this influx is detrimental to French producers and highlights that Ukrainian producers are using substances prohibited in the EU, which is not in compliance with EU standards. He is urging the ministry to take immediate action to safeguard domestic producers in 2024 and advocate for consistent production standards for Ukrainian products, equivalent to those required of French producers.
