Uruguay's rice sector is experiencing a positive cycle, with the last four harvests being the best on record. The average yield was 8,828 kilos per hectare, despite challenges such as floods and adverse weather. There is a call for diversification of cultivars to allow for earlier harvests, as the majority of Uruguay's rice surface is planted with the INIA Merín variety, which has a long cycle and was significantly affected by the weather. International prices are high due to India's export restrictions and Brazilian floods, with the final price closing at US$14,835 for a 50-kilo bag of rice. Uruguay has accessed the European market with nearly a third of its rice, demonstrating the grain's quality and safety.
