Taiwan's pork ban, in place since November 2014 due to avian influenza and other epidemics, has minimally impacted its pig industry, as over 90% of its pork is consumed locally. However, canned pork products have continued to be exported to the mainland, accounting for nearly 90% of total exports last year. The mainland's ban on meat products containing ractopamine and concerns over highly pathogenic avian flu have led to increased inspections to prevent these products from entering the mainland market. Despite this, Taiwan's agricultural affairs department suggests that the export figures may not accurately reflect the situation on the ground.
