The Ministry of Health in Malaysia has responded to reports from The Thai Pesticide Alert Network and local media about Shine Muscat grapes containing pesticide residues above the maximum allowed level. The Ministry assures that imported food is monitored for safety under the Food Act 1983 and Regulations, with specific focus on pesticide residues. Between 2020 and September 2024, 5,561 samples of imported fruits and vegetables were tested, resulting in 165 non-compliant samples. Non-compliant products are subject to recalls, disposal, re-export, or legal action. No non-compliance was found in Shine Muscat grapes, and a total of 4 non-compliant grape samples out of 234 tested during the same period were from other varieties. Importations of non-compliant foodstuffs can lead to outright bans if repeat offenses are noted.
