The national government is defending its decision to adhere to UPOV 91, a seed genetic technology agreement included in the Omnibus Law, despite divisions within the Liaison Table on the matter. The Secretary of Bioeconomy, Fernando Vilella, stated that joining UPOV 91 would provide access to the best genetic technology for all producers and improve crop productivity, exportable balances, and resilience to climate volatility. The agreement is expected to empower local genetic developers and extend the protection of plant varieties, with certain exemptions for small farmers.
