The article highlights the challenges faced by small-scale pig farmers in Vietnam due to a significant decrease in live hog prices, which have dropped from 70,000 VND/kg to as low as 40,000 VND/kg for the first half of the year. Despite raising pigs to a size of 130 - 150 kg, prices remain around 50,000 VND/kg, leading to losses. The price drop is observed across various regions, with the lowest prices in Ha Nam, Ninh Binh, and Lao Cai provinces. The import of meat and meat products to Vietnam has seen an increase both in volume and value in 2021, with pork imports soaring by 300% compared to the same period in 2020. The price of imported pork is significantly lower than domestic pork, further exacerbating the challenges for small-scale farmers. Additionally, the resurfacing of African swine fever and high feed prices are adding to the pressures on livestock producers.
