(Jeonju=Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Jin-bang = The Rural Development Administration announced on the 20th that it has discovered pepper genetic resources with resistance to various diseases, including anthrax and bacterial spot.

Peppers, a globally important vegetable crop, have seen their productivity significantly affected by increased diseases and pests due to recent climate changes.

Typically, finding disease-resistant breeding materials requires the use of biological inoculation methods, but this process is time-consuming and costly when applied to many resources.

To address this, researchers at the Agricultural Genetic Resources Center analyzed the genotypes using 14 molecular markers associated with major diseases in peppers to quickly obtain information on disease-resistant resources.

After analyzing 7,000 pepper resources collected from 112 countries worldwide, the research team selected 23 resources resistant to nine diseases, including anthrax.

Additionally, the team analyzed the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) genotype after inoculating peppers with anthrax to select resistant resources and applied for a plant patent for the anthrax-resistant variety 'Si-neuntan-jeo'.

The research results were published in two international academic journals (Plants·IF 4.0, BMC Plant Biology·IF 5.2).

The Agricultural Genetic Resources Center of the Rural Development Administration has disclosed information on the 23 newly discovered multi-disease-resistant resources and five anthrax-resistant resources in the seed bank (genebank.rda.go.kr) and has started distributing them.

An Byeong-ok, Director of the Agricultural Genetic Resources Center, said, "This research has discovered genetic resources essential for developing disease-resistant pepper varieties" and "Going forward, we will expand research to analyze the genotypes of disease and disaster resistance in 20 major crops, including rice, wheat, and soybeans, to discover superior resources and provide materials."
