Ukrainian varieties of walnut are known to be the most winter-hardy in the world, thanks to natural and human selection. The seeds for the beginning of the selection process were brought to the American continent by Odessans, where Ukraine and Moldova were located on the northern edge of the warm climatic zone suitable for walnut cultivation. The gradual movement of walnut cultivation to the north, along with the selection of winter-resistant forms, has resulted in Ukrainian varieties being among the most winter-resistant in the world.
