Vietnamese pepper prices have seen a significant increase, surpassing 160,000 VND/kg due to a surge in pepper imports from major markets like the US and Germany. This increase is attributed to a global decrease in pepper production due to El Nino weather conditions and a lack of inventory from the previous year. As a result, the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association anticipates further price hikes. The association also cautions farmers against planting new pepper trees due to the risks of price fluctuations and extreme weather conditions. In the first five months of 2024, Vietnam exported over 114,400 tons of pepper, generating a total export value of 493 million USD, marking a 13% decrease in export volume but a 21% increase in export turnover compared to the same period in 2023.
