Hungarian slaughterhouses saw a decrease in cattle processing by 7.5% in the first three quarters of 2024, compared to the same period in the previous year, processing a total of 61.5 thousand cattle. Conversely, the number of pigs and poultry slaughtered increased by 6.9% and 8.8% respectively, with pigs totaling 3.5 million and poultry 180 million. The types of poultry slaughtered also saw variations, with a significant increase in ducks by 44% but a decrease in geese by 15%. Chicken remained the dominant type, accounting for 82% of the processed poultry. The highly pathogenic H5N1 bird flu that emerged in Hungary in September 2024 has led to strict export restrictions on Hungarian poultry and poultry products by several countries, including bans and limitations from the United Kingdom, Japan, and the United States, among others.
