Epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHE) serotype 8 has been reported in cattle in Europe for the first time, with cases confirmed in Sardinia, Sicily, Spain, France, and Portugal. The disease, which has no licensed vaccines and can lead to trade restrictions, has been studied by researchers from Italy, France, and Tunisia. They found that infected calves showed symptoms such as fever and lesions, and one in five infected sheep also experienced fever, suggesting that sheep could play a role in the disease's transmission. The study also noted differences in neutralization titers between calves and small ruminants, and a significant decrease in red blood cell count in infected calves.
