A new type of insect pest, originally from Indonesia, has been causing significant damage to chilli crops in the state of Telangana, India. The pest, identified as thrips, has led to widespread crop destruction, prompting farmers to demand compensation. Over 70-80,000 acres of chilli plantation have been affected, with the pest's onslaught first observed last year. The increased planting of chilli crops, covering 3.59 lakh acres across ten districts, is expected to have nationwide repercussions, potentially impacting export projections. The total cost of cultivation, including production and harvesting expenses, is approximately 1.50 lakh per acre.
