The Tibet Autonomous Region in Southwest China is planning to expand its highland barley planting area to 2.2 million mu (146,667 hectares) in 2023, an increase from 2.18 million mu in 2022. This move aims to ensure a stable rise in the production of the region's staple grain. The region expects to harvest around 840,000 tonnes of barley this year, following advancements in planting techniques and the introduction of new, high-yield, disease-resistant varieties. The humble highland barley, a staple of the Tibetan diet for over 3,500 years, has found new life as a source of dietary supplements, highlighting its growing importance in healthier living.
