Germany is taking significant steps to protect the critically endangered European eel by implementing a closed season for eel fishing in 2024/2025, prohibiting recreational eel fishing in marine waters until the end of 2024, and advocating for uniform closed season regulations across the Baltic Sea at the EU level. These measures aim to allow eels ready to spawn to migrate to their spawning grounds in the Sargasso Sea, addressing the dramatic decline in eel populations due to factors like habitat degradation and fishing. The migration period of silver eels from German waters typically spans from August to February, with September identified as a crucial month for the closed season. The Federal Office for Agriculture and Food (BLE) will manage the implementation in marine waters through a general decree, while the federal states will regulate the closed season in brackish waters, with the EU mandating a commercial fishing ban for at least six months to protect migrating silver eels.
