Iran spends approximately $500 million annually on importing tropical fruits, with bananas making up the majority of these imports. Despite this, the country only meets 20% of its domestic demand for bananas through local production in the southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchestan, which accounts for 99.8% of the country’s banana output. The government is planning to increase banana plantation size by 2,000 hectares in collaboration with the private sector, using modern technology to enhance yield and quality. However, extreme weather conditions have caused significant losses to banana and guava orchards. Turkey is the leading exporter of bananas to Iran, despite Ecuador and the Philippines being the largest producers.
