In an effort to secure the water resource and strengthen the agricultural sector in the Tumbes region, the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri) inaugurated the rehabilitation work of the La Peña Canal, which benefits the districts of San Jacinto, Corrales, and La Cruz. The work is now fully completed and operational, under the management of the Users' Commission of the Left Bank Hydraulic Sub-Sector of the Tumbes River. The formal transfer is carried out through the Special Binational Project Puyango Tumbes. The rehabilitation included the recovery of radial and sliding gates, the fine-tuning of electromechanical equipment, the installation of LED lighting in common areas, the renewal of auxiliary energy systems, and the incorporation of metal walkways for river cleaning, in addition to the lining of more than one kilometer of the main canal.
