Ettore Prandini, president of Coldiretti, has expressed concern over the recent agreement between the Commission, the Council, and Parliament that excludes wheat from the automatic safeguard mechanism, a tool that reintroduces tariff quotas when imports of certain products exceed a limit. Prandini warns this could cause market distortions, especially in the agricultural sector. Despite these concerns, Ukrainian soft wheat imports to Italy quadrupled in 2023 compared to 2021. Coldiretti and Filiera Italia will continue advocating for wheat's inclusion in the safeguard mechanism and a change in the reference period.
