UNESCO has recognized the origin of pisco as being from Peru, between 1587 and 1635, leading to controversy with Chile. In response, Chile maintains that pisco is not exclusively Peruvian, supported by international trade agreements and judicial decisions. They also plan to inscribe their own pisco cultural landscape on the world heritage list. The Chilean government has expressed concern over the inclusion of Peruvian documents in the Unesco registry and stresses that more than 50 countries recognize Chilean pisco as a unique product, protected by over 20 free trade agreements involving 46 countries.
