The Union of Small Farmers and Ranchers in Spain is warning of a potential market crisis in the agricultural sector, with a serious impact on the wine industry. The sector is struggling with a lack of profitability and the challenges of climate change, exacerbated by non-compliance with the Food Chain Law and the influence of international politics. There has also been a significant decline in consumption, leading to a 45% drop in demand for new vineyards. The High Level Group on the future of the wine sector in the European Commission is set to meet in September, and the UPA has proposed a decalogue of measures to support the sector. The union also expects a normal harvest this year, but concerns remain about low stock levels and the freezing of authorizations for new plantations until 2026.
