The US Department of Agriculture's report forecasts a rise in global sugar consumption for the 2021/2022 marketing year due to growth in China, India, and Russia, despite a decrease in stocks due to declines in China, Indonesia, and Thailand. The department expects global sugar production to remain stable at 181 million tons, with Mexico's production expected to reach 6.3 million tons. In Egypt, sugar production and consumption are expected to remain roughly the same as last year, with exports and imports also expected to remain steady. Egypt ranks 11th in expected global sugar production for the year.
The report also mentions an investment project in Egypt to reclaim and cultivate 181,000 feddans, with a total investment of about $1 billion, which is expected to contribute to covering 75% of Egypt’s sugar imports by producing nearly one million tons annually. This project includes the production of sugar from beets in the West Minya region, in agreement with the General Authority for Reconstruction Projects and Agricultural Development and the Canal Sugar Company.
