An outbreak of Salmonella linked to tahini and halva products from Syria has affected Europe, the United States, and Canada. The outbreak, first identified in Europe in January 2019, has resulted in 121 cases across five European countries, six cases in the United States, and eight in Canada. The majority of the cases are in children under 10, with the outbreak strains being various types of Salmonella. The source of the contamination is believed to be sesame-based products, and despite recalls and product withdrawals, the outbreak continues. The European Food Safety Authority and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control have expressed concerns about the long shelf life of the products and the lack of information on their manufacturing.
