A report by Michigan State University reveals that Michigan's potato industry contributes $2.5 billion to the state's GDP and supports nearly 22,000 jobs, making it the state's second-largest commodity. The potato supply chain also generates about $832 million in wages. Known as the U.S. chipping capital, one in four bags of potato chips nationwide contains Michigan-grown potatoes. In 2022, the state produced almost 1.9 billion pounds of potatoes, ranking it eighth in production and sixth in sales nationally.
