The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that California walnut producers have passed amendments to their federal marketing order, effective from June 07, 2023. These amendments aim to eliminate mandatory inspection and certification for inshell and shelled walnuts, establish a new mechanism for handler assessments, and increase oversight with the authority to charge interest for late payments. Over two-thirds of the growers or those representing two-thirds of the walnut volume supported these changes. These amendments are part of the Agricultural Marketing Agreement Act of 1937, which allows producers and handlers to use their funds to enhance marketing efforts.
