(Jeju=Yonhap News) Reporter Byun Ji-cheol = A section chief, identified as A, was caught attempting to circulate unripe citrus fruits that had been artificially colored yellow using chemical agents.
The Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Police announced on the 1st that they caught a section chief from Seogwipo City, identified as A, attempting to circulate unripe green citrus fruits that had been artificially ripened and colored using chemical agents, in violation of the "Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Citrus Production and Circulation Ordinance."
Section chief A was caught after spraying a mixture of plant growth regulators (pesticides) and potassium hydroxide, a chemical agent, on 600 kg of citrus fruits (equivalent to 30 containers of 20 kg each) and storing them covered with plastic to artificially ripen and color them.
The 70-year-old operator of the section chief, identified as B, is under investigation for having committed the crime in hopes of obtaining a higher price for yellow citrus fruits compared to green ones.
Citrus fruits artificially ripened and colored using chemical agents have lower sugar content and higher rates of decay, and such actions are prohibited by the ordinance.
The Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Police plan to notify the Seogwipo City Office to impose a fine on B.
