In 2020, Germany saw a significant increase in the production and sales of meat substitute products, with a 39% rise to 83.7 thousand tons and a value of 374.9 million euros, according to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). Despite this growth, the meat industry dwarfed these figures, with a production value of 38.6 billion euros, though it experienced a minor decline of 4% from the previous year. The consumption of meat in Germany has also decreased over the past few decades, with households consuming only about a third of the meat they did in 1978. This data is derived from Destatis and the income and consumption sample (EVS), which gathers information on household income and expenditure every five years.
