The walnut and pecan sector in the EU is facing a competitive disadvantage due to phytosanitary limitations that are not allowed in third countries like the US and Chile, where higher yields are achieved. The use of cyanamide, prohibited in the EU due to health risks, is permitted in these countries. Consequently, EU imports of walnuts and pecans, primarily from the US and Chile, exceeded 186,755 tons in 2023, reaching a value of 725 million euros. The Fepex Committee is advocating for the differentiation of Community productions in quality terms to compete with imports. The sector is also contending with climatic challenges, which led to a 40% reduction in production in the 2022/2023 campaign. There is interest in new walnut and pecan plantations in Spain, but legislation and commercial priorities may hamper their development. The Committee is planning to engage in discussions with other sectoral organizations to develop strategies for these crops.
