(Seoul=Yonhap News) = Watermelon and cucumber prices have surged over 20% compared to a year ago, which are popular summer consumer products.
The government plans to proactively implement supply stability measures, such as managing cabbage production volumes, as agricultural product supply can rapidly change depending on summer weather conditions.
According to the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation's (aT) Agricultural Product Distribution Information (KAMIS), watermelon retail prices were 26,209 won per piece, up 27.2% from a year ago.
Compared to the three-year average price (excluding the maximum and minimum prices from 2020 to last year), prices are 32.3% higher.
The watermelon price increase is due to delayed watermelon growth from reduced sunlight last month and increased demand during the hot weather.
Cucumbers and zucchinis have seen price increases due to delayed growth from the heat.
Cucumber (spiny variety) retail prices were 11,781 won for 10 pieces, up 25.6% from a year ago and 29.0% from the average price.
Zucchini retail prices were 1,404 won per piece, up 25.1% from a year ago and 15.7% from the average price.
Egg prices are also strong.
Egg (special grade) retail prices for 30 pieces averaged 7,089 won from the 1st to 9th of this month, up 9.4% from the same period last year (6,479 won).
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs attributes the egg price increase to rising consumption.
A ministry official stated that while daily average egg production from January to May increased by 1.0% compared to last year, consumption increased by 2.3%.
Chicken meat retail prices averaged 5,843 won per kg from the 1st to 9th of this month, down 3.4% from the same period last year (6,047 won).
However, with record-breaking heat causing increased poultry deaths and chicken demand expected to rise before the first day of summer (around the 20th), prices may increase.
