The latest report from the Observatory of the Dairy Chain (OCLA), published weeks ago, warned that in Argentina the number of dairy farms has broken through the 9000 barrier and that, as observed year after year, fewer and fewer establishments are concentrating a larger share of the market.
Due to the characteristics of this sector, which requires investment in animals and technology and an increase in scale to be competitive, it is becoming increasingly difficult for small producers to stay afloat. In August, more than half of the milk was produced by just 16% of the dairy farms.
The fact is that this trend is already a "global phenomenon," OCLA points out, as it is observed in virtually all major producing countries. While the number of dairy farms is decreasing, total production continues to grow, and the figures, in several countries, are alarming.
