Bulgaria is experiencing a decline in fish catches, with the annual catch reaching only 7,000 tons last year, a 17% increase from the previous year which was the lowest in the last 5 years. The country's fish consumption is notably low, with each person consuming approximately 8 kilograms per year, which is significantly less than the EU average of 24 kilograms. The consumption of fish in Bulgaria is predominantly for personal use, with 90% of the population consuming fish at least once a month. The majority of the fish catch comes from the waters of the Black Sea, with the types of fish varied including sprat, rapani, and saffron, and to a lesser extent, carp from the Danube.
